Mortality - The Fat Poet

Mortality

Mortality
A good friend
You knock
At my door again
This time
Banging harder
Than the last time
I know you come
Only so you can take

I will not go with you
No, not yet
Not without seeing
The eyes of my
Children who will
Soon be on their way
Not without hearing
Their first words
Not without seeing
How fast they grow
Not without looking
Deep into their mother’s
Loving eyes
And thank her for
What is to be
A beautiful life

Her eyes
Where I lived and died
Many times over
Her eyes
That have given me
A longing for life again
Her eyes
That moved me to believe
In dreams after years
Of drifting through
Emptiness

No my friend
Not until I have
Finally held her hand
Be it a score or more
Not until she has
Felt my heartbeat
In the dark
Not until we get
Our fair share
Of welcoming the sunrise
And watching the sunset
Not until she remembers me
And remembers our love
Yes, our lost love

We have missed
So many lifetimes
Let us not miss
What remains
In this one
No, my friend
Not today
